The ubiquitous and gentlemanly Tony Mitchell took it upon himself to show me the sights of London, and by sights, I mean porn shops. A small but rambunctious collection of DVD’s and assorted pervy skin mags were the fare, and I regret not picking some of the more interesting tidbits on show. For some reason I was distracted by the more colorful gay DVD collections, an entire shelf of which landed on my head after I overzeaously grabbed “Bi-freedom” (or a title to that effect) at a Soho bookshop. Tony ran out of the shop as I sat in the pile of gay porn DVD’s, vainly trying to put them back on the shelf.
To Mr. Mitchell’s credit, he did take us to a wonderful Spanish tapas restaurant on Old Compton. The seafood paella, braised octopus and giant prawns were delicious, as was the line the waiter dropped on my male model friend: “Oh you don’t eat dessert; that’s why you have that great body!” German fruitcake for dessert!
Robert Chouraqui played host to my madness for a couple days. Not only was he extremely gracious after waiting 3 hours for me to miss my train and get another connection through Lyon, he treated me to the perfection that is French cuisine in the heart of Aix-en-Provence. Well-balanced subtlety permeated every part of the moussaka served in a split aubergine. Our dishes were served with local wine par excellence and the most delightful waitstaff in shirts that Parker Lewis couldn’t lose. I highly recommend the warmth, the fountains, the ancient Greek and Roman remnants, and Restaurant Laurane et sa Maison on rue Victor Leydet in Aix.
